Fields of Corn
02:36
|
|||
Fleeting times we have to spend together
The simple pleasure of a summer drive
Looking out the window for a reason why it's good to be alive
Summer is a faltering endeavor
Cooler weather with each passing day
Every time we talk about the Fall, we have a little less to say
Try to hide it doesn't matter
That Jesus was and is the Son of God
And when he comes again, everybody's gonna have to show their cards
You can see a glimpse of the hereafter
Smiling in the golden fields of corn
You've been waiting for that Harvest since the day that you were born

Salt Trucks
03:52
|
|||
You've been the back of my eyes so long
I don't know how to get sleep when you're gone
I had a thought to quit my job
Take a closer look, maybe finish that lonesome book
I tried to romance it but I never had a chance till you were gone
Salt trucks careening down the road
Another day working for a union wage
The fenders of the cars corroding
They start to rust back into dust
I tried to romance it but I never had a chance till you were gone

Sunshine
04:16
|
|||
I lost my keys again and I couldn't get inside
Bitter eyes and pride hide from the cold
I climbed a hill and I watched the sun come up
And tried to remember a joke that you told
Seagulls by the lake keep me looking up
Magic arches on a baby blue sky
Digging through the trash and circling the sun
I start to wonder where they go to die
You lit a candle and you watched the shadows dance
The last romance you forgot to rewind
Action outside is happening by chance
Cause everything changes, it changes in time
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear just how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Go Leafs Go!
02:01
|
|||
Just like that, say you're coming right back
But the drive will break you down
And when you get out of town, you'll see
Is this the kind of tired you learn at university?
Tired of people? Tired of me?
You're going to find an enlightened mind
And maybe then you'll see
How easily the janitors sleep
But Father knows best when he's clutching his chest
Cause his daughter has got to be free
And the clouds in her blood have to speak

Molasses
03:21
|
|||
Looking for nickels in a jar
One cup of coffee goes pretty far
Snow turns to slush and slush seeps through
My common sense and my canvas shoes
As I'm walking away from you
Thinking of things I should have learned
The Christmas presents I returned
I was born in this parking lot
And neon signs taught me to walk
And now I'm walking away from you
The sun will be coming pretty soon
A smudge of molasses on the moon
Remember when we painted our arms?
We made plans to buy this farm
We didn't want to know the truth

The Sails Will Fill Out
05:03
|
|||
All your sadistic kissing's got him down
Cause he knows one day the sails will fill out
And you'll be a empty hope, an endless ghost
It's written in those books you made
And tied up in those words you trade
Pirate's poison and mermaid's jade
To hold back home
Tip top, sugar
Don't you think it's so chilly in the drink, and he's not cold?
But perhaps your judgement's not the best
The ice chest and the bottle jest and walk you home

Shotgun Shell
03:58
|
|||
When I was walking on the beach, I saw a shotgun shell
Everbody's got to die, so it might as well be sunny
Oh, it might as well
And you were talkin' bout a room with a treadmill floor
And in this room, there ain't no windows and no doors
And you are running till you can't run no more
If you hear something creeping in the night
Baby, it's all right, I think the coast is clear
Scary movies all the time are messing with your mind
Cause I'm the only thing to fear
We're both working on a mouthful of cavities
All this sugar's wrecking havoc on our teeth
And we need money cause dentists don't come cheap
And just in case I ever graduate with my degree
God above's the only one who knows just what that will mean
But I'll keep this office clean

Way Up
02:58
|
|||
The whole world should buy you flowers
The whole world should hold it's breathe
And sing about you in the shower
Even though it's voice is not the best
And I'm writing these letters and I'm writing these songs
But my handwriting's awful and the words come out wrong
I hope I can remember how, because my head is way up in the clouds
I'm on my way up
I'm on my way up now
When I call you on the telephone
We don't have much to say
I'll send you just enough records for nine hours on the interstate

Romulus is an Owl
02:57
|
|||
I like owls for mostly stupid reasons
Cause they seem so smart and so secretive
And as far as spirit animals go
I don't think I've ever left a single thing unsaid
But isn't it obvious?
We have our secrets and our blood
Visiting Romulus
but his eyes are so big and he sees how we're squirming
Moss is growing underneath the cardboard box
He has a chicken wire window view
The world must seem so strange
When you have wings that you can't use
And you don't get around
You're the last elm tree in this town
But you still think they'll cut you down
You are beautiful
I'm just surprised
And Romulus can see it in my eyes

Crystal Ball
03:51
|
|||
In his tomb, Beethoven is running out of room to roll
The garden blooms and we can enjoy the fruits and vegetables
So take a bite of a strawberry
It's perfectly sweet
And there are things that always make a love occur so natural
Diamond rings that sparkle with a secret only jewelers know
So take a walk by the salty sea
It's just you and me
Drive a couple hundred miles down the line
Ain't it swell how a cup of coffee can make you feel so divine?
And if you ever wonder how I feel inside
Your guess is as good as mine

A Lamp in the Window
06:05
|
|||
Sometimes I can't believe you're mine
You're too soft and too sublime
Lost in rosemary and thyme
This hot chocolate is out of sight
Feels good staying up late at night
Never get sick of Christmas lights
And your silhouette keeps so assured
And I think "silhouette" is such a pretty word
Among the best I've ever heard
So I'll call you back again
Pocket full of fountain pens
Postcards that you'll never send
God is just outside your room
Coaxing flower bulbs to bloom
Mixing you some strange perfume
And when it seems all right, it's better than it seems
And in my dreams at night, I hear "A Love Supreme"
And I am learning what that means
